4 Calamities Destroying America's Economy Being Ignored by Elites
AlterNet | Frithjof Bergmann | 08/27/14

The world's current economic and political structures are proving incapable of fixing the global crisis of poverty, unemployment, and dislocation from a viable way of life for the majority of the world's population. Why? Let us begin with one present-day example: Larry Summers, former Secretary of the Treasury and also former chair of the Board of Economic Advisors, recently was the principal guest of the national radio broadcast "On Point." The topic of the hour-long dialogue was growing "inequality."

Summers posited that we are in an oddly slow recovery. He gave some reasons for the slowness but maintained that the measures instigated by the government (the Federal Reserve pumping funds into the economy, and the like) were fundamentally correct, and that with patience and persistence the recovery would solve the problems we have.

This basically is the position of Obama and importantly, by no means only his. Every government in every country subscribes essentially to this same apostolic faith. That faith is pathetic and even grotesquely mistaken. It ignores the four "Tsunami" causes for the globally increasing inequality:

  1. Automation: The number of jobs that have been automated out of existence in the last 30 years is astronomical.
  2. A second colossal cause is globalization. Despite the nonstop discussion of that topic its basic significance is still largely misunderstood.
  3. Environmental degradation is growing... or in-ther-words depletion of natural resources
  4. The fourth mega-force that escalates inequality everywhere is the industrialization of farming. Throughout the millennia of the Agricultural epoch approximately 75% of the population lived and worked on farms. Now, in some contries it is 4%.

Shocking Picture of What Life Will Look Like When You Can't Afford to Retire
AlterNet | Lynn Stuart Parramore | 08/25/14

In a must-read article in the current issue of Harper's magazine, journalist Jessica Bruder, adjunct professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, adds a new phrase to America's vocabulary: "Elderly migrant worker." She documents a growing trend of older Americans for whom the reality of unaffordable housing and scarcity of work has driven them from their homes and onto the road in search of seasonal and temporary employment across the country. Packed into RVs, detached from their communities, these "Okies" of the Great Recession put in time at Amazon warehouses, farms and amusement parks, popping free over-the-counter pain reliever to mask the agony of strained muscles and sore backs. And when they can't hold up any longer? The RV sometimes becomes a coffin. ... Read more

Louisiana is drowning, quickly.
magazine | author | date

Scientists now say one of the greatest environmental and economic disasters in the nation’s history is rushing toward a catastrophic conclusion over the next 50 years, so far unabated and largely unnoticed.

At the current rates that the sea is rising and land is sinking, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists say by 2100 the Gulf of Mexico could rise as much as 4.3 feet across this landscape, which has an average elevation of about 3 feet. If that happens, everything outside the protective levees -- most of Southeast Louisiana -- would be underwater. ... Read more

JPMorgan and Other Banks Struck by Hackers
NYT | Nicole Perlroth | 08/27/14

A number of United States banks, including JPMorgan Chase and at least four others, were struck by hackers in a series of coordinated attacks this month, according to four people briefed on a continuing investigation into the crimes.

The hackers infiltrated the networks of the banks, siphoning off gigabytes of data, including checking and savings account information, in what security experts described as a sophisticated cyberattack.... Read more

For sale: Systems that can secretly track where cellphone users go around the globe
WashingtonPost | Craig Timberg | 08/24/14

Makers of surveillance systems are offering governments across the world the ability to track the movements of almost anybody who carries a cellphone, whether they are blocks away or on another continent.

The technology works by exploiting an essential fact of all cellular networks: They must keep detailed, up-to-the-minute records on the locations of their customers to deliver calls and other services to them. Surveillance systems are secretly collecting these records to map people's travels over days, weeks or longer, according to company marketing documents and experts in surveillance technology.

The world's most powerful intelligence services, such as the National Security Agency and Britain's GCHQ, long have used cellphone data to track targets around the globe. But experts say these new systems allow less technically advanced governments to track people in any nation -- including the United States -- with relative ease and precision. ... Read more

NSA surveillance programs are identified by "SIGADs," short for "signals intelligence activity designators." Internal NSA support documents reviewed by The Washington Post indicate that location information is collected via at least 10 SIGADs, including: DANCINGOASIS, FAIRVIEW, MYSTIC, OAKSTAR, RAMPART-A, RAMPART-M, RESOLUTETITAN, STORMBREW, TIMBERLINE, and WINDSTOP. Three of the SIGADs are believed to be located in the United States: FAIRVIEW, STORMBREW and TIMBERLINE which is at Sugar Grove Research Station in West Virginia.

Documents show how the NSA infers relationships based on mobile location data
WashingtonPost | Ashkan Soltani | older, but good

The NSA doesn't just have the technical capabilities to collect location-based data in bulk. A 24-page NSA white paper shows that the agency has a powerful suite of algorithms, or data sorting tools, that allow it to learn a great deal about how people live their lives. ...

... The NSA collects Internet and phone metadata via relationships with corporate partners that allow the agency to intercept traffic at key network routing points. These partnerships take many forms. A company may transfer Call Detail Records to the NSA or allow the agency to install large-scale surveillance equipment to capture this traffic. ... Read more

There are people out there deeply invested in companies and jobs and lifestyles which depend upon using our collective atmosphere as a sewer for their products. 2% of the Earth's population is responsible for putting out 50% of the CO2, and even fewer benefit from the proceeds of companies which do that. Just read Exxon-Mobil's report. *They* say their own scientists tell them climate change is real and dangerous, and they expect a number higher than the mean IPCC number by 2050, 6-7 degrees Fahrenheit increase. But they just don't believe the average American is willing to pay the increased energy costs to avoid that, and, so, they say, their profits are safe, as are their energy reserves.?

The UN's New Report on Global Warming Is the Most Terrifying Yet
Bill Moyers | John Light | 08/27/14

The New York Times and Bloomberg News got a look at a draft of a new UN report on climate change. It's bleak, to say the least.

Runaway growth on the emission of greenhouse gases is swamping all political efforts to deal with the problem, raising the risk of "severe, pervasive and irreversible impacts" over the coming decades, according to a draft of a major new United Nations report. ...

... But one of the central points of the IPCC report is that some of what we've wrought is already irreversible, and more of it soon will be. The world's existing power plants are already slated to pump over 300 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere -- a figure that's growing by billions of tons each year, speeding up the changes that are already underway. Governments' efforts to do something are a drop in the bucket compared to what's needed. ... Read more

Fighting Ebola With Nothing but Hope
TheDailyBeast.com | Abby Haglage | 08/27/14

Primary health care manager Emmanuel Boyah is at Ebola's frontline in Liberia. If he contracts the disease, there will be no 'secret serum' waiting for him. Yet he keeps fighting.

Black shirt tucked into snug black pants, his role is made transparent by the bright yellow embroidery across his chest: "International Rescue Committee." Stacks of clean brown boxes surrounding him hold bleach, latex gloves, and masks--weapons against Ebola. These supplies will be distributed to medical facilities across Lofa County, one of the hardest hit regions in Liberia, where reports show more than 624 deaths.

According to a report released this week by the World Health Organization, an estimated 240 health-care workers have been infected with Ebola in West Africa. Of that number, at least 50 percent are already dead. For an international relief worker, contracting the virus likely means becoming the focus of headlines about high-tech aircrafts and secret serums. For a West African doctor in the same position, it means simply one less health-care worker on a continent in desperate need of more. ... Read more

*TYT | Tap Water Dries Out In California. Could You Be Next? (08/25/14) [4:19]
Drinking, showering, cooking…we all rely on tap water everyday as a part of our routine. It is easy to take the endless flowing water from out facets for granted. What would you do if your tap water supply ends?

"California's extreme drought has dried up tap water supplies for hundreds of people living in rural San Joaquin Valley homes.

At least 182 of the 1,400 homes in East Porterville, California have no water or are having "some kind of water issue," the Porterville Recorder reports. The state's drought, which is in its third year, has dried up some of these residents' wells, forcing the county to deliver emergency supplies of water. The wells rely on the Tule River for water, but due to the drought, river flows have plummeted this year.

Tulare County Office of Emergency Services delivered 12-gallon-per person rations of bottled water to affected residents Friday, and the county has also provided a 5,000-gallon, non-potable water tank for people to use for bathing and flushing.

But the bottled water rations are only supposed to last three weeks, Emergency services manager Andrew Lockman told the AP -- after that, low-income residents will need to sign up for a grant program in order to keep receiving water, and the county is asking local companies to make bottled water donations."

Hamas official admits group murdered 3 Israeli teens
RT | author | 08/21/14

A Hamas official has admitted for the first time that members of its militant wing kidnapped and killed three Israeli teenagers in June. This fueled increased tensions with Israel and eventually led to the IDF's bombardment of Gaza.

Saleh Al-Arouri said the al-Qassam Brigades were responsible, after Hamas' leader Khaled Meshaal, who is in exile in Qatar, had earlier denied his group was involved. However, Meshaal did praise those who carried out the kidnappings. ... Read more

IBM's new supercomputing chip mimics the human brain with very little power
engadget.com | Joseph Volpe | 08/10/14

A lot has changed in the three years since IBM first unveiled a prototype of its human brain-inspired SyNAPSE (Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics) chip. That single-core prototype has now been significantly scaled up, leading to a new, production-ready SyNAPSE chip that blows past its predecessor with 1 million neurons, 256 million synapses and 4,096 neurosynaptic cores, all the while only requiring 70mW of power.

Traditionally, faster processing has always meant greater power consumption, but IBM's new SyNAPSE chip flips that paradigm on its head. To give you some perspective of just how low-powered this supercomputing chip is, IBM's Chief Scientist Dr. Dharmendra S. Modha says it requires power equivalent to that of a battery from a hearing aid. It's an achievement that's merited IBM the cover of the journal Science; it also has the potential to drastically alter conventional approaches to computing. In fact, the new SyNAPSE chip is so disruptive to the current computing landscape that IBM's created a new programming language to go along with it and an educational outreach program called SyNAPSE University. It's no wonder why the project received $53 million in funding from DARPA. ... Read more

Dramatically different from traditional software, IBM's new programming model breaks the mold of sequential operation underlying today's von Neumann architectures and computers. It is instead tailored for a new class of distributed, highly interconnected, asynchronous, parallel, large-scale cognitive computing architectures.

A New Era of Computing Requires a New Way to Program Computers
asmarterplanet.com | Dharmendra S. Modha | 08/08/13

Sixty years ago, in the face of tremendous skepticism, IBM engineer John Backus set out to radically change the economics of scientific computing on the IBM 704 by making programming much cheaper, faster, and reliable. The language that he and his colleagues developed--FORTRAN--became the first widely used high-level programming language. It laid the groundwork for the software industry as we know it and the waves of transformation that computing has brought to industry, science, government and society. The importance of FORTRAN is hard to overestimate as demonstrated by O'Reilly's poster on "The History of Programming Languages."

Today, we're at another turning point in the history of information technology. The era that Backus and his contemporaries helped create, the programmable computing era, is being superseded by the era of cognitive computing. Increasingly, computers will gather huge quantities of data, reason over the data, and learn from their interactions with information and people. These new capabilities will help us penetrate complexity and make better decisions about everything from how to manage cities to how to solve confounding business problems. ... Read more

The Secret of Oz by Mr Bill Still () [1:50:48]
It is well known in economics academia that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum in 1900 is loaded with powerful symbols of monetary reform which were the core of the Populist movement and the 1896 and 1900 president bid of Democrat William Jennings Bryan.

The yellow brick road (gold standard), the emerald city of Oz (greenback money), even Dorothy's silver slippers (changed to ruby slippers for the movie version) were the symbol of Baum's and Bryan's belief that adding silver coinage to gold would provide much needed money to a depression-strapped, 1890s America.

We believe Baum's symbols represent the only solution to relieve the growing economic hardship here in America -- and the rest of the world. Practically speaking, 2009 marks the 70th anniversary of the 1939 MGM release of the The Wizard of Oz movie, so interest will be very high. Even Oz websites put up by kids get millions of hits.

On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists attacked the Unites States. They hijacked four airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.
Economy, Wall Street and Banksters

Wall Street and Banksters

Wall Street is an eight-block-long street running roughly northwest to southeast from Broadway to South Street, at the East River, in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan in New York City. Over time, the term has become a metonym for the financial markets of the United States as a whole, the American financial services industry (even if financial firms are not physically located there), or New York-based financial interests.

A report written by a Georgetown University team led by Phillip Karber conducted a three-year study to map out Chinas complex tunnel system, which stretches 5,000 km (3,000 miles). The Vietnam War

The Vietnam War

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's ten-part, 18-hour documentary series, THE VIETNAM WAR, tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. Visceral and immersive, the series explores the human dimensions of the war through revelatory testimony of nearly 80 witnesses from all sides--Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam. Ten years in the making, the series includes rarely seen and digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th Century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and secret audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations.
